Formation
South Georgia is the highest of the islands emerging from the submarine Scotia Ridge chain that links the South American Andes with the Antarctic Peninsula. The relief is composed by metamorphic rocks with heaps of mud and volcanic lava covered with sediments. Many slopes of South Georgia are huge screes. The South Sandwich islands, also part of the Scotia Ridge, have volcanoes many of which are still active.
Ice
The mountains have been eroded during the ice ages. Today, more than half of the island is covered with large ice fields. Broad glaciers go down to the sea and icebergs obstruct the bays breaking into innumerable floes. The big icebergs that can be seen around South Georgia come from Antarctica, pushed by circumpolar winds and currents. They are to be found long before reaching South Georgia, following the Antarctic Convergence, where the cold polar waters plunge below warmer seas.

Vegetation
With the retreat of the glaciers 10 000 years ago, peat began to grow in many humid places but the typical plant of South Georgia is the tussock grass. It can reach two metres high with long leaves clumps that make the soil uneven. It is the habitat of many animals. Birds use it for their nests and their burrows, and fur seals invade it as their territory, damaging the surrounding areas.
Numerous moss and lichens struggle against the snow and the cold and flowers add vivid colours to South Georgian spring. Some plants such as the dandelion have been introduced and still colonize the surroundings of the abandoned whaling stations.
