Ice
The mountains have been eroded during the ice ages. Today,
more than half of the island is covered with large ice fields.
Broad glaciers go down to the sea and icebergs obstruct
the bays breaking into innumerable floes. The big icebergs
that can be seen around South Georgia come from Antarctica,
pushed by circumpolar winds and currents. They are to be
found long before reaching South Georgia, following the
Antarctic Convergence, where the cold polar waters plunge
below warmer seas.
