Sailing
cruises in South Georgia
|
| In
spring,South Georgia is colonised by an impressive number of birds
and marine mammals. Isolated in the middle of the ocean, protected
from the invasion by tourists, it is THE paradise for marine wildlife
in a magnificent landscape formed by a chain of mountains spurting
out of the sea to culminate at 3000 meters altitude.

Sailing
in South Georgia on board sailing yacht Le Sourire
From Port Stanley in the Falkland islands (Malvinas)
5 to 6 days of open sea sailing are necessary to reach South Georgia.
Then the yacht sails between huge icebergs and cliffs covered
with penguins or albatrosses before entering the many anchorage
to observe the wildlife, or to go for beautiful walks in the mountains.

Landscapes
South Georgia is one of the emerged peaks
of the Scotia Ridge. It is a real dorsal spine of mountains
170 km long, with enormous glaciers flowing to the sea close
to tussock grass bordered beaches.

Wildlife
In spring and summer, South Georgia shows the most extraordinary
concentration of typical subantarctic marine wildlife: thousands
of elephant seals, fur seals, penguins, albatrosses, petrels,
fulmars... gather on the island for reproduction. |

Some
History...
After its discovery and the reports about its natural richness,
South Georgia became a base for the sealers of the 19th century
and the largest whaling centre in the Antarctic seas between
1904 and 1966.
